MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A late-night traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit on U.S. 1 on June 9, 2026, after a driver hit speeds of 125 mph while trying to outrun the Sheriff’s Office.
Jefry Julian Chaucanes Vasquez, 23, of Miami Gardens, Florida, was arrested following the incident. Authorities reported that no one was injured during the chase.
The encounter began around 11:48 p.m. near Mile Marker 80. Deputies spotted a Mazda sedan traveling 90 mph and attempted to pull the vehicle over. Instead of stopping, Chaucanes Vasquez accelerated and fled.
During the pursuit, Chaucanes Vasquez repeatedly passed other motorists illegally. As the Mazda reached speeds of 125 mph, other drivers on the road were forced to pull over to avoid being struck.
The chase ended near Mile Marker 83 after deputies successfully deployed tire spikes to stop the vehicle. Chaucanes Vasquez was then taken into custody.
A subsequent search revealed that Chaucanes Vasquez had two THC vapes in his possession. He was transported to jail and faces multiple charges, including DUI, fleeing and eluding, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, reckless driving, and dangerous/excessive speeding.
