A 55-year-old Colorado mother faces a second-degree murder charge after her 16-year-old daughter died from chronic alcohol abuse, leaving behind a digital trail of desperate text messages detailing her failing health.
Gretchen Leanne Ryan was arrested at her home by Arvada Police on May 15, 2026, following a months-long investigation. She is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
The case began on March 9, 2026, when Arvada Fire and Arvada Police personnel responded to a residence in the 6400 block of West 85th Avenue. First responders found the unresponsive teenager, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy report issued on April 4, 2026, by Jefferson County Forensic Pathologist Dr. Dawn Holmes determined the cause of death was aspiration pneumonia related to chronic alcohol use. While the manner of death was classified as natural due to the voluntary nature of the drinking, Dr. Holmes noted that the teen had an abnormally fatty liver for her age. The pathologist explained that chronic alcohol consumption suppresses gag and cough reflexes, reduces salivary function, and impairs the immune system, leading to a terminal episode of acute aspiration pneumonia.
Detectives with the Arvada Police Department conducted forensic examinations on cellular devices belonging to both Ryan and her daughter. According to investigators, the digital evidence showed the pair frequently used alcohol and marijuana together. Starting in September 2025, they reportedly discussed procuring and drinking alcohol on an almost daily basis.
The communications indicate that Ryan arranged regular alcohol deliveries to the residence. Investigators state she also took active steps to hide the teenager’s drinking from the girl’s father, who lived primarily in the basement of the home.
The text messages detailed significant physical decline in the months leading up to the teenager’s death. According to police, the victim messaged Ryan about vomiting blood, difficulty eating, an inability to walk, and needing to use diapers due to severe symptoms from excessive drinking. The records show the teenager repeatedly told her mother she was afraid she was going to die and asked for help.
On the night before her death, the victim continued to text Ryan about being sick. Her final outgoing communication was sent from her iPad at 10:07 P.M. on March 8, 2026. The device was later found near her body in the bathroom. Though Ryan sent subsequent messages that went unanswered, authorities note that a 911 call was not placed until approximately 8:15 A.M. the following morning.
A physical search of the victim’s bedroom uncovered 173 empty alcohol bottles hidden under her bed and inside her closet. The stash included various brands and sizes of vodka and other hard liquors.
In April 2025, the teenager was withdrawn from her public high school to enroll in online courses. At the time of her death, she had completed only one online semester of the ninth grade and had not participated in outside activities for several months.
The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office has formally charged Ryan with one count of Murder in the Second Degree – knowingly causing death, a class two felony. She is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 17, 2026, at 8:00 A.M.
