On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Major Crimes Detective Kip Peterson arrested Ehren Volcy, 18, for the murder of 19-year-old Deshawn Ballestero.

According to investigators, on May 12, 2023, at around 7:20 p.m., MCSO deputies responded to a home in the 600 block of Marion Oaks Boulevard in reference to a shooting.

When deputies arrived, they located Deshawn Ballestero suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies rendered aid until Marion County Fire Rescue responded and transported the victim to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where he dies from his injuries.

Witnesses provided deputies with a description of a vehicle they saw fleeing from the location at a high rate of speed. Approximately 30 minutes later, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching that description, and contact was made with the driver, Ehren Volcy, and a juvenile.

Through video and photographs provided by witnesses, deputies confirmed that Volcy’s vehicle was the one witnesses saw leaving the scene of the shooting. Volcy and the juvenile were detained while deputies continued to gather evidence and information.

Through his investigation, Detective Peterson determined that Volcy drove to Ballestero’s home with an unidentified adult male and the juvenile. Volcy then exited the vehicle, armed himself with a firearm, and fatally shot Ballestero, who was outside changing a tire.

Probable cause for Volcy’s arrest was determined based on an abundance of evidence collected, which corroborated multiple witnesses’ statements.

Volcy was arrested for Murder in the Second Degree and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he is held without bond.
