A 63-year-old man who had just purchased a brand-new, high-performance sports car is now facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter following a devastating crash that killed an elderly husband and wife on a coastal road in Ormond-By-The-Sea.

Scott P. March, 63, was driving his 2026 Chevrolet Corvette on State Road A1A on the evening of November 1 when he slammed into a Jeep, causing the vehicle to flip over and resulting in the deaths of Thomas Lauck and his wife, Julia Ann Lauck, both 73.

According to a motion for pretrial detention, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. near Sandpiper Ridge Road. March was reportedly traveling north when he approached the Laucks’ Jeep, which was moving in the same direction.

Investigators allege March attempted to pass the Jeep at an estimated 110 mph in a designated “no pass zone,” where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. Detectives noted that just 5.5 seconds before the fatal impact, March’s speed was a blazing 147 mph in a residential area packed with businesses and pedestrians.

The impact sent the Jeep flipping, ejecting both Thomas and Julia Lauck, who were not wearing seatbelts. Thomas Lauck died at the scene, and his wife passed away at a hospital days later.

Detectives noted that witnesses described March’s driving pattern leading up to the crash as “extremely reckless,” including passing multiple vehicles in no-pass zones and nearly causing numerous other collisions.

March, whose mug shot showed visible facial injuries, testified at a bond hearing that he had purchased the $200,000+ Corvette the very day of the tragic crash. When asked about the specifics of the purchase, he reportedly told the court, “I didn’t really pay attention to the numbers. I just wanted the car.”

Authorities also revealed that two days after the fatal collision, March was arrested for loitering on a 120-foot yacht named the “Gale Winds.” March claimed ownership of the vessel, but the legitimate owner informed police he did not have permission to be aboard.

Additionally, March has a previous DUI conviction from California in 2018.
