A single-vehicle incident on Saturday afternoon resulted in three fatalities and one injury, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Three people died and a child was injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 near Lakeland on Sunday, September 21, at approximately 4:25 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported.
The FHP report states that a Toyota SUV, driven by a 60-year-old man from Tampa, was traveling eastbound on I-4 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV exited the highway onto the south shoulder and struck a tree.
The vehicle then traveled up an embankment toward SR-570 (Polk Parkway), struck a guardrail, and vaulted over the eastbound lanes of I-4. The SUV struck another tree and then overturned.
The driver and two female passengers from Tampa, aged 83 and 60, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. A six-year-old female passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for medical care.
