HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – The long game of hide-and-seek for a fugitive accused of horrific crimes in the late 1980s has finally come to an end. After more than three decades on the move, Joseph Vincent Michaels is back in Hernando County to face the music.
The case dates back to October 1989. At that time, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into the sexual battery of a 15-year-old victim.
Investigators determined that multiple violations had occurred years prior, while the child was between the ages of 10 and 12.
Detectives eventually secured an arrest warrant for Michaels, charging him with two counts of Capital Sexual Battery and one count of Sexual Activity with a Child. However, Michaels didn’t stick around to see a courtroom.
He vanished from Florida before the warrant could be served, sparking a manhunt that would go cold for decades.

For 35 years, Michaels managed to stay off the radar by weaving a web of false identities. According to law enforcement, he lived under several assumed names, including “Pete Puma,” “Alan Schmidt,” and “Peter Kiesel.”
His run finally hit a dead end in March 2026, when authorities tracked him down and took him into custody.
Michaels is now being held at the Hernando Detention Center. His bond has been set at $1.6 million.
While the arrest marks a major breakthrough, the investigation is still active. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is looking for more pieces of the puzzle regarding Michaels’ time as a fugitive.
“Anyone with any information regarding this case and Joseph Vincent Michaels, please contact Detective George Loydgren at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, 352-797-3714,” the agency stated in an official release.
