A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck off the coast of York, Maine, at 10:22 a.m. on Monday. The tremors were felt across multiple states, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the seismic event, noting its relatively moderate magnitude. While felt across a wide area, earthquakes of this size are not uncommon in the broader geological context of New England. The USGS also emphasized that such occurrences are generally not cause for significant concern.

While reports of shaking were widespread, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation. Residents in the affected areas described feeling a noticeable shaking or rumbling, with some reporting rattling windows and household items.

New England, including its geological extension southward through Long Island, has experienced both small and, less frequently, larger, damaging earthquakes since colonial times. Moderately damaging earthquakes occur in the region every few decades, with smaller events felt roughly twice a year.

Historical records show significant seismic activity in the region. The Boston area suffered damage three times within a 28-year period in the mid-1700s, and New York City experienced damage in 1737 and 1884.

The largest known New England earthquakes occurred in 1638 (estimated magnitude 6.5) in Vermont or New Hampshire, and in 1755 (estimated magnitude 5.8) offshore from Cape Ann, northeast of Boston. The Cape Ann earthquake notably caused severe damage to Boston’s waterfront. More recently, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in central New Hampshire in 1940 caused moderate damage.
