Police in Florida arrested a woman Saturday morning following a chaotic domestic dispute that sent a bullet through a bedroom ceiling near an infant.

The incident began around 4:00 a.m. on March 7, 2026. According to investigators with the Niceville Police Department, Shaniyah Monah Carmichael arrived at the home of her estranged ex-husband and forced her way into a bedroom. Police report that Carmichael was armed with a gun at the time of the break-in.

A struggle ensued inside the room, during which the firearm discharged. The round struck the ceiling, traveling in the direction of a room where the couple’s 9-month-old son was located.

Following the shot, Carmichael fled the scene with the child, prompting a search by local authorities.

Police eventually tracked Carmichael’s vehicle to a home in Shalimar, Florida. Officers located both the suspect and the infant at the residence and took Carmichael into custody without further incident.

After obtaining a search warrant for the Shalimar property, investigators recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. The 9-month-old was returned safely to his father.

Carmichael now faces several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child neglect, battery, and firing a weapon on residential property.

The Niceville Police Department credited multiple agencies for the resolution of the case. “The Niceville Police Department would like to thank the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations for their assistance during the investigation,” the department stated in a release.
