A brutal winter storm has turned deadly in New York City. Officials confirmed that five people died as freezing temperatures and heavy snow slammed the city.

The storm is part of a massive weather system moving from the South all the way up to New England. It has brought dangerous mix of sleet, freezing rain, and bitter cold to millions of Americans.

In New York, the sudden drop in temperature has forced the city to take emergency steps.

“While it’s still too early to determine the causes of death, it is a reminder that every year New Yorkers succumb to the cold,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He announced that Monday will be a remote learning day for all city students to keep them off the icy streets.

“The danger of this weather cannot be overstated,” Mamdani added.

Nationwide Chaos

The cold isn’t just a problem for the East Coast. The severe weather has knocked out power for over 880,000 customers across the country. States in the South, including Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, have seen the worst of the outages.

Travelers are also stuck. More than 11,000 flights have been cancelled and another 12,000 delayed at major airports.

Forecasters say the trouble isn’t over yet. They are warning of “catastrophic ice accumulation” that could snap tree limbs and power lines. The bitter cold is expected to stick around, making it harder for crews to fix power lines and keep roads clear.
