TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department announced the conclusion of a three-month enforcement initiative on February 5, 2026, resulting in the arrest of 55 individuals.

The program, titled “Operation: Safer Streets,” focused on identifying and apprehending chronic offenders to address recurring criminal activity within city neighborhoods.

The operation moved beyond general narcotics enforcement by targeting individuals with extensive violent criminal histories. During the three-month period, law enforcement recovered a firearm along with quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, and various other illegal narcotics. According to department officials, the strategy was designed to remove the primary drivers of crime that specifically impact the quality of life in local residential areas.

“The result of this operation and arrests of these 55 drug dealers clearly disrupted the availability of illegal narcotics in our community,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. He noted that the presence of drug sales in public spaces like parks is traumatic for families and stated that the department remains committed to improving safety through community partnerships.

The initiative was a joint effort involving local, state, and federal agencies. The Tampa Police Department coordinated with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the State Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. This collaborative model follows the framework previously established during “Operation Overdrive” in 2022.

“Operation Safe Streets was a joint collaboration between Tampa Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration,” said DEA Tampa District Office Assistant Special Agent in Charge Todd Cavaliere. “The goal was to clean up Tampa streets and be free from drug distribution and violence that inevitably accompanies drug markets. Tampa citizens can be assured law enforcement will work together to make their communities safe. DEA is committed to stopping the importation and distribution of narcotics in the United States and continue to push for a Fentanyl Free America.”

Law enforcement officials stated that while the primary phase of the operation has concluded, the investigation remains active. The participating agencies continue to monitor criminal activity in the region, and additional arrests are anticipated as the partnership moves forward.
