A 62-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after sexually assaulting a handicapped child nearly three years ago.

According to the Edgewater Police Department, on July 9, 2019, James Long, 62, sexually assaulted a 16-year-old mentally handicapped child.

The Edgewater Police Department Criminal Investigations Division worked diligently alongside the State Attorney, Florida’s 7th Circuit for almost 3 years to bring justice to the victim and her family.

Police say that on May 11, 2022, Long was found guilty on all three counts of sexual battery on a victim between the ages of 12-18 by a subject 18 years of age or older. Each count carries a maximum of 30 years in prison.

“This week, James Long was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the remainder of his natural life,” said Edgewater Police Department in a statement.

“We are hopeful the victim and her family can find peace and closure with Long’s sentencing,” said EPD.
