TAMPA, Fla. – Residents across the Tampa Bay area should keep both umbrellas and heavy coats within reach this week. While the region starts off with mild, partly sunny conditions, a mid-week weather system is set to bring a soaking rain followed by a sharp drop in temperatures that could see the mercury flirt with the freezing mark by Thursday night.

The week begins on a relatively calm note. Today features partly sunny skies with a comfortable high near 67 degrees and a gentle north-northeast breeze. Clouds will gather overnight and linger through Tuesday, keeping temperatures consistent with highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 50s.

The weather pattern shifts noticeably on Wednesday. Clouds will thicken throughout the morning, with a 40 percent chance of showers developing after 1 p.m. Commuters should prepare for a wet evening and overnight period; the chance of precipitation jumps to 70 percent Wednesday night, with showers likely after 1 a.m.

Once the rain clears out Thursday morning, the Bay area will see a dramatic change in air mass. Thursday will be breezy, with northwest winds gusting as high as 25 mph, ushering in significantly colder air. While the daytime high may touch 60, temperatures will plummet after sunset.

Thursday night brings the coldest air of the week. Skies will clear, allowing temperatures to drop to a low around 32 degrees—potentially endangering sensitive vegetation and requiring residents to bundle up.

Sunshine returns for Friday, but the chill will remain. Highs will struggle to reach 57 degrees, and Friday night will stay crisp with a low around 37.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the deep freeze will ease slightly. Saturday and Sunday promise plenty of sunshine, with daytime highs rebounding into the low-to-mid 60s, offering a bright but cool end to a volatile week of weather.
