Emergency responders performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after finding him unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence in June, according to recently released dispatch audio.
A District Fire and EMS dispatch call recording from June 14, first reported by Punchbowl News and made public on Wednesday, shows that an Advanced Life Support ambulance arrived at the 84-year-old Kentucky senator’s home shortly before 9 a.m. Paramedics responded to the scene for a “cardiac arrest.”
Hours after the emergency response, McConnell’s spokesperson, David Popp, issued a statement confirming the senator had been “admitted” to the hospital and was receiving “excellent care.” McConnell’s office has declined to share further details about his current health status or the cause of the medical emergency.
The incident follows a series of physical setbacks for McConnell over the last few years. Most recently, he missed Senate votes in February after being hospitalized for flu-like symptoms.
In October 2025, McConnell fell in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building when a reporter questioning him about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) blocked his access to a handrail.
Prior to those events, McConnell suffered a concussion from a fall in March 2023 and experienced two highly publicized on-camera freezing episodes during news conferences later that summer.
Another fall in December 2024 resulted in minor injuries that required him to use a wheelchair for a period of time. On Capitol Hill, staff members have frequently been seen physically assisting McConnell as he navigates the complex.
McConnell announced in December 2024 that he would step down as the Senate Republican leader, a position he held for nearly 20 years. In February 2025, he announced he would not seek reelection when his current term ends in January 2027. Republican Representative Andy Barr won the Kentucky Senate GOP primary in May and is heavily favored to win the general election this November to succeed McConnell.
