An illegal immigrant in Dallas remains in custody today after being charged with the grisly murder of his wife, whom he had married less than thirty days prior. Carrollton police arrested 24-year-old Francisco Mendez-Marin on March 18 following the discovery of 20-year-old Karla Rangel’s body.
According to investigators, Rangel died after her throat was slit with a pocketknife.
The arrest occurred shortly after the incident, with responding officers reporting that Mendez-Marin was found with blood visible on his clothing.
A bloody pocketknife was also recovered from his person at the scene. Records indicate the couple had recently wed, making the violent encounter a sudden end to their brief marriage.
The case has drawn significant attention from federal authorities due to the suspect’s immigration status. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has officially lodged a detainer with Texas officials, requesting that Mendez-Marin be held for federal custody should he be released from local jail.

Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed that Mendez-Marin is a Mexican national.
The incident sparked a sharp response from Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis, who addressed the brutality of the crime in a formal statement.
“This depraved animal murdered his own wife just one month after they were married by brutally slitting her throat with a pocketknife,” Bis said. “This illegal alien should have never been allowed into our country to commit this heinous murder.”
Mendez-Marin currently faces a felony charge of homicide. He is being held at the Dallas County Jail under the supervision of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Federal officials emphasized that they are working closely with Dallas authorities to ensure the suspect remains behind bars.
“ICE requested authorities in Dallas to not release this cold-blooded killer onto the streets,” Bis added. “Thankfully, Dallas politicians cooperate with ICE, so together we can ensure this murderer is NEVER loose in American communities.”
