A Death Every 12 Minutes: AAA’s 4-Step Plan To Stop The Carnage In 2026

Every 12 minutes, a life ends on an American roadway.

It is a grim cadence that claimed over 39,000 lives in 2024 alone, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. As the calendar turns to 2026, safety advocates are pushing back against the narrative that these are unavoidable “accidents.” Instead, they are framing roadway deaths as the direct result of human choices—choices that can be changed.

AAA – The Auto Club Group has issued a public challenge to Florida drivers to adopt four specific resolutions for the new year, aiming to curb the fatal trends dominated by speeding, distraction, impairment, and a lack of seatbelt use.

“Safe driving saves lives. This year, we’re challenging Floridians to choose safety every time they get behind the wheel,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “Let’s make 2026 the year we turn resolutions into life-saving actions.”

The organization’s “Crashes Hit Different When They Happen to You” campaign highlights the preventability of the four leading causes of traffic fatalities.

The Speed Factor

The urge to rush remains the deadliest habit on the road. In 2023, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all roadway fatalities, resulting in over 11,000 deaths. AAA points out that speeding doesn’t just cut reaction times; it drastically escalates the physics of a crash, turning survivable minor collisions into fatal wrecks. The group advises drivers to treat the speed limit as a hard ceiling, not a suggestion, noting that arriving a few minutes late beats the alternative.

The Distraction Epidemic

While smartphones have connected the world, they have disconnected drivers from the road. Texting behind the wheel increases the risk of a crash by 23 times.

“When you are fully attentive, you can better anticipate the actions of other motorists,” the organization noted in its advisory. The recommendation for 2026 is simple but difficult for many: put the phone on silent and throw it in the glove box or backseat before turning the ignition.

Impairment and Restraints

The final two pillars of the safety plan involve sobriety and seatbelts. AAA emphasized that an impaired driver effectively turns a vehicle into a weapon, with consequences that ripple through communities for decades. The group urges pre-planning rideshare or designated drivers to remove the temptation of driving after drinking.

Furthermore, despite modern vehicle safety tech, the seatbelt remains the single most effective defense against ejection and death.

“When we slow down, stay focused, drive sober, and buckle up, we’re not just protecting ourselves,” Jenkins added. “We’re helping create safer roads for everyone.”
