TAMPA, Fla. – Every Opening Day is a new beginning, and every team brings a large dose of hype and question marks about its performance in the upcoming season. None is as scrutinized as the Tampa Bay Rays, perhaps the most interesting team in baseball to watch this season.
Without one of the biggest payrolls in Major League Baseball, the Rays always seem to be competitive as a result of their pioneering use of advanced tools in evaluating player ability and conceptualizing lineups and match-ups.
In the early stretch of Spring Training, the Rays opened with a loss to Atlanta, picked up wins against Boston and Minnesota, and later fell to Detroit before eventually tying the Tigers in March. Sounds about right for the Rays.
