A Mother’s Last Eviction: The Chilling Scene That Left Mississippi Investigators Speechless

The quiet retirement of a beloved Mississippi teacher ended in a scene so horrific it left veteran law enforcement officers shaken.

29-year-old Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr. now faces a litany of charges, including first- and second-degree murder, mayhem, and tampering with evidence, following the discovery of his mother’s dismembered remains.

The investigation began on April 4, when the eldest son of 62-year-old Lana Brown Bradley called the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for a welfare check. He told authorities he hadn’t been able to reach his mother for two days.

When deputies arrived at the home Bradley shared with her two younger sons, they didn’t find the retired educator. Instead, they were met by the overwhelming scent of cleaning chemicals and a floor so slippery with cleaning agents that it was difficult to walk.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten noted that the cleaning effort itself was a red flag, as family members remarked it was highly uncharacteristic for Jackson to be tidying the house.

The search took a dark turn when deputies heard splashing behind a locked bathroom door. Inside, they found Jackson and a toilet filled with a “black substance.” Sheriff Patten later confirmed to local station WJTV that the substance was Bradley’s flesh, which Jackson was allegedly attempting to flush away.

“He chopped her up in pieces,” Patten told reporters, describing the crime as the most “heinous” he had ever witnessed. “He dismembered her in a way that whoever came looking for her were going to have to do their due diligence.”

The search moved outside to a wooded area near the property. There, amid the trees, the grim reality was finalized when searchers discovered a suitcase and Bradley’s head.

Family members informed investigators that Bradley had grown increasingly fearful of Jackson and was in the process of trying to evict him from the home.

According to authorities, Jackson had allegedly threatened his mother the day before the welfare check specifically because of the eviction plans. While family members suggested Jackson struggled with mental instability, Sheriff Patten described the nature of the crime and the subsequent cleanup as “very calculating.”

Jackson waived his right to a preliminary hearing this past Tuesday. He is currently being held at the Adams County Jail as the case moves toward a grand jury.
