Senator Outlines New Criteria for Federal Reserve Chair Amid Calls for Accountability and Economic Reform
With the clock ticking on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s tenure, Senator Rick Scott has formally recommended that President Donald Trump seek a new Fed chair who is the “opposite” of Powell.
In a letter to the President, Scott laid out a list of criteria for the next head of the central bank, arguing that Powell’s leadership has been a disaster for the American economy and the “American Dream.”
Scott’s letter is the latest in a series of attacks on the current Fed chairman, whom he accuses of gross mismanagement, lack of accountability, and inflationary policies.

The senator’s criticisms range from the Fed’s ballooning balance sheet to the soaring cost of living and the lavish, multi-billion-dollar renovation of the Fed’s headquarters. He claims these failures have made it harder for average Americans to afford a home and put food on the table.
The senator’s push for a new direction at the Fed comes as he champions a number of legislative efforts to “rein in” the central bank. These include bills to audit the Fed, create an independent inspector general, and stop the Fed from paying interest to banks on their reserve balances—a practice Scott says costs taxpayers $186 billion in 2024 alone.
Scott’s letter suggests a new Fed chair must prioritize fiscal responsibility, focusing on paying down the Fed’s balance sheet and reining in spending. The ideal candidate, he says, would be committed to price stability for American families and would foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.

He also called for a leader who would put the interests of the American people above political considerations, alluding to reports that Powell has resisted lowering interest rates to avoid the perception of acting at the President’s request.
“The job posting for the new Fed chair will read as an indictment of Powell’s failures,” Scott wrote, concluding that President Trump will be remembered for re-establishing faith in the Fed and the economy.
