A new El Niño climate pattern has officially formed in the Pacific Ocean, arriving much earlier and developing much faster than meteorologists usually see. According to forecasters at AccuWeather, there is a 40 percent chance this system will grow into a “super El Niño,” carrying widespread weather impacts that could stretch well into 2027.
The last El Niño event occurred during the 2023 to 2024 season. Typically, these climate cycles do not begin until the fall. However, ocean conditions shifted dramatically this spring. By early June, water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific had already climbed by at least 0.9 of a degree Fahrenheit, crossing the official threshold for El Niño conditions.
“The sea surface temperatures are quickly changing in the equatorial Pacific,” AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok explained.
Because it is starting so early, the system has more time to gain strength. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill noted that current summer weather patterns are already matching what is expected during an El Niño. “Most El Niños begin in the fall, so this is developing much earlier and faster than expected,” Merrill said.

If water temperatures near the equator in the eastern Pacific reach at least 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above the long-term average, the event will be classified as a super El Niño. As of early June, ocean warmth in that region was already running at exceptional levels, marking the highest temperatures seen since 1982, according to data from Climate Central. Additional warm patches, including a massive stretch of water from Japan to north of Hawaii, are also fueling the system. Pastelok added, “Warming water between Hawaii and the Baja can help feed into the warming near the equator to increase El Niño.”
While it can heavily influence global conditions, experts stress that El Niño itself is just a climate pattern. “An El Niño is not a storm,” Pastelok explained. “It does not affect you directly. It is a cycle that contributes, like many other factors, to produce weather changes and sometimes extremes.”
In the United States, those changes will depend heavily on the region. Over the summer, El Niño can increase the chances of severe weather and tornadoes in the central and eastern parts of the country. It is also expected to intensify drought conditions in the Northwest and northern Rockies while bringing some relief to the Southwest. However, Merrill cautioned that the pattern “won’t do anything to eliminate the long-term drought in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic until we get to late fall and early winter.”
Looking ahead to the Atlantic hurricane season, the shifting winds caused by El Niño generally reduce the total number of storms. But forecasters warn that people living in hurricane zones still need to be prepared, noting that it only takes one storm to make a severe impact. “While El Niño may lower the total storm count, it will not shut down the Atlantic hurricane season,” said AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva. In fact, warmer waters in the Pacific could actually increase tropical storm activity for Mexico, Hawaii, and parts of California.
The most noticeable impacts of El Niño are usually felt during the winter months. Forecasters expect the system to trigger a stormy winter across California and the Southwest, which could increase flooding risks but help refill vital water reservoirs. The Gulf Coast generally sees wetter and cooler conditions, while the northern half of the country typically experiences milder temperatures with less rain and snow.
