AAA Urges Road Trip Preparedness As Record 3.9 Million Floridians Hit The Road For Independence Day

With an unprecedented 3.9 million Floridians anticipated to embark on Independence Day road trips, AAA is emphasizing the importance of vehicle readiness and safe driving practices. The auto club predicts a surge in roadside assistance calls during the nine-day holiday period, primarily due to dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts.

“The hotter summer months take a toll on your vehicle’s battery and tires,” said Mark Jenkins, Public Relations Manager for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “That’s why it’s so important to get a pre-trip vehicle inspection. Doing so could uncover potential vehicle problems that might not otherwise reveal themselves until your trip.”

AAA recommends the following pre-trip checks:

  • Tires: Inspect all tires, including the spare, for proper inflation and adequate tread depth.
  • Battery: If your engine struggles to start or your lights appear dim, have your battery tested at a AAA Car Care Center or Approved Auto Repair Facility. AAA can also provide on-site battery testing and replacement for members.
  • Brakes: Listen and feel for grinding or vibrations when braking. If detected, schedule a brake inspection at a repair shop.
  • Wiper Blades and Windshield Cleaner: Replace streaking or ineffective wiper blades, ideally every 6-12 months.
  • Fluids: Ensure engine oil, coolant, brake, transmission, and power steering fluids are at the correct levels, using products that meet your vehicle’s specifications.
  • Emergency Kit: Stock your kit with essentials like a flashlight, extra batteries, first-aid supplies, drinking water, non-perishable snacks, jumper cables, flares or reflectors, a rain poncho, basic tools, duct tape, gloves, and shop rags or paper towels.

In the event of car trouble, AAA advises drivers to:

  • Pull over as far as safely possible.
  • Activate hazard lights.
  • Request assistance via phone, website, or the AAA Mobile app.
  • Stay with your vehicle if it’s safe, but remain vigilant of oncoming traffic if you need to exit.
  • If on a highway, try to reach the next exit or stopping point.

AAA also provides resources like Approved Auto Repair Facility locators, Repair Cost Estimators, and Gas Cost Calculators to assist travelers.

To ensure a safe journey, AAA reminds drivers to:

  • Observe speed limits and adjust for conditions.
  • Avoid distractions and stay focused on the road.
  • Get ample rest before and during long drives.
  • Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Move over for roadside workers and stranded motorists.

By prioritizing vehicle maintenance and practicing safe driving habits, travelers can minimize the risk of breakdowns and contribute to a safer Independence Day holiday for everyone on the road.
