Air Travel Chaos Worsens: FAA-Ordered Cancellations Rise Amid Controller Shortage

Air travel disruptions are escalating across the United States as a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) order mandates deeper flight cuts on Tuesday, a direct response to the strain on the national airspace system during the ongoing government shutdown.

Airlines are now expected to cancel 6% of their scheduled flights at 40 of the nation’s busiest airports—an increase from the initial 4% cutbacks. This spike in cancellations pushed the total scrubbed flights nationwide past 1,200 by Tuesday afternoon, following more than 2,400 cancellations on Monday, according to FlightAware data.

The FAA order is an emergency measure to address a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, many of whom are either working without pay or have increased sick calls as the shutdown persists.

Cuts May Worsen Before They Improve

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy acknowledged the increasing severity, stating that the decision to cut capacity was proactive because safety “data was going in the wrong direction.” He cited an increase in concerning metrics, including more runway incursions and reports from airline pilots about issues with air traffic control responses.

Duffy warned that the flight reductions may not be over, indicating they could ultimately ramp up to a 10% cut by Friday if the government shutdown continues.

“For anyone to say that we did too much, they are sorely mistaken,” Secretary Duffy said. “We’ll continue to manage through this crisis.”

The Secretary stressed that a return to normal flight patterns will not be immediate, even if a deal to end the government shutdown is reached. He stated that flight restrictions would be reduced or removed only “when the data says we should,” depending on the normalization of air traffic controller staffing levels and an improvement in safety data benchmarks.

Travelers are strongly advised to check with their airlines for the status of their flights as the uncertainty surrounding the shutdown and its ripple effects continues to disrupt air travel nationwide.
