U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) announced on Tuesday the introduction of the “Restoring Lethality Act,” a bill aimed at eliminating all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)-related requirements within the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
The move marks the latest effort in the Senator’s ongoing campaign to strip what he calls “Biden-era woke policies” from the military and refocus the institution solely on its core mission of lethality and readiness.

Tuberville has been a vocal critic of DEI initiatives in the armed forces, arguing that they divert resources and attention from national security priorities.
“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris treated the Pentagon like a trial run for their latest DEI initiatives,” Senator Tuberville stated in a press release. “We have to make sure zero taxpayer dollars go towards this divisive propaganda that distracts from the core mission of the military: to protect the security of the United States.”
This legislation builds upon Senator Tuberville’s prior success in the fiscal year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), where he successfully eliminated all DEI funding. The “Restoring Lethality Act” seeks to codify that prohibition, ensuring DEI funding remains absent from the Pentagon’s budget going forward.

The Senator also highlighted the ongoing efforts by what he referred to as “President Trump and Secretary Hegseth” to dismantle DEI within the military, emphasizing that more work remains to be done.
Senator Tuberville’s push against DEI in the military is part of a broader agenda, as evidenced by his past legislative efforts. These include introducing legislation to dismantle DEI more broadly, supporting the elimination of DEI and restoration of lethality in armed forces, removing woke DEI requirements from the CHIPS Act, and protecting women’s sports at military service academies.
The Senator reiterated his belief that a strong military is one entirely focused on its combat capabilities.
“We need a military that is 100% focused on protecting our country and enhancing national security,” Tuberville concluded.
