A vigilant Martin County Sheriff’s Deputy prevented a potentially tragic situation on the Stuart Causeway Bridge, rescuing two small children from a car whose driver had seemingly fallen asleep at the wheel.

Martin County Sheriff’s Deputy Gedeon Brenovil was conducting routine traffic enforcement when he spotted a vehicle stalled at the peak of the bridge. The car was running and in drive, held only by the emergency brake.

In closer inspection, Deputy Brenovil discovered the driver, 37-year-old Abby Lyn Schagrin, was asleep behind the wheel.

A crack pipe was found in plain sight, and deputies made an even more alarming discovery in the back seat: an unrestrained toddler and an infant, both also asleep. Deputies quickly secured Schagrin and safely removed the two children from the vehicle.

Schagrin was determined to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being transported to the Martin County Jail. Schagrin faces multiple charges, including DUI refusal with a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, and two counts of child neglect. The children were released to family members.

According to a report from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Schagrin has a long criminal record that includes arrests for battery, DUI, methamphetamine manufacturing, and possession of controlled substances.

Authorities credited the quick actions of the Traffic Unit for preventing what could have been a devastating accident and ensuring the safety of the two young children.
