BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — A security lockdown at Central High School ended Thursday afternoon after law enforcement searched the campus and determined a report of an armed individual was likely a hoax.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office gave the all-clear around 2:45 p.m., lifting the active threat protocol that had placed the campus on high alert earlier in the day.
Deputies and school administrators launched an immediate response following an initial phone tip claiming there was a weapon on school grounds. Authorities swept the facilities, found no credible danger, and confirmed the campus was secure.
The Sheriff’s Office and the Hernando County School District are investigating the incident as a suspected “swatting” attempt—a false report intended to draw a large emergency response.
Following the lockdown, the school transitioned to a brief “hold-in-place” status to allow deputies to supervise a controlled, orderly dismissal of students.
District officials confirmed that all after-school activities and events scheduled at Central High School were canceled for the remainder of the day.
