PLANT CITY, Fla. – A major traffic disruption ground eastbound Interstate 4 to a halt Wednesday evening following a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles, including an Amazon semi-truck. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 7:00 PM just west of Mile Marker 21, near the Alexander Street exit.
The collision sequence began when a Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the outside lane attempted to change lanes. During the maneuver, the truck struck a Jeep Wrangler that was traveling in the adjacent exit-only lane for Alexander Street.
The force of the initial impact sent both vehicles spinning into further trouble. The Silverado was redirected back into its original lane, where it collided with a Dodge Charger. Simultaneously, the Jeep was propelled into the path of an Amazon tractor-trailer.
While no life-threatening injuries were immediately reported by investigators, the aftermath of the crash created a significant environmental and logistical headache for commuters. The Amazon tractor-trailer suffered a severe fuel leak upon impact, spilling diesel across the roadway.
Due to the hazardous nature of the spill, emergency crews were forced to shut down portions of the interstate for an extended period to contain the leak and clear the wreckage.
Traffic was diverted as hazmat teams worked the scene, resulting in miles of backups that lasted well into the night.
