An anonymous tip passed from a local television station to law enforcement led to the arrest of an Okeechobee man and the rescue of six animals from a Canal Point ranch.
Jose Arreaga, 34, faces multiple counts of animal cruelty after the Martin County Sheriff’s Office investigated a property in the 16000 block of Connors Highway.
The case began when a citizen contacted WPEC TV-12 with concerns about animal welfare on the property. The station then alerted the sheriff’s office. Criminal Investigations Detective Christine Polizzi initiated the investigation, sending Ranch and Grove detectives, along with Animal Services officers, to the site.
At the ranch, authorities found a dead dog locked inside a cage. Investigators reported that the dog showed signs of starvation. Nearby, a second dog was discovered under a trailer; the animal was severely emaciated and unable to lift its head. Detectives also found a female dog, her three puppies, and a cat, all living in neglectful conditions.
Arreaga told detectives that he kept the dogs at the ranch. He stated that when he was unable to care for them himself, he relied on another person to do so, but no one did.
Deputies arrested Arreaga and transported him to the Martin County Jail. The six surviving animals—the emaciated male dog, the female dog, her three puppies, and the cat—were seized and taken to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast for medical treatment. Officials noted that the animals will be made available for adoption once they recover.
