Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has ignited a fresh debate over presidential authority and war powers, suggesting that President Donald Trump’s recent military strikes against Iran constitute grounds for impeachment.

Her declaration follows Trump’s unilateral decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities, a move that has drawn strong reactions across the political spectrum and highlighted deep divisions within both major parties.

On Saturday, following President Trump’s announcement on Truth Social regarding strikes on sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, Ocasio-Cortez took to X, stating, “The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”

Her campaign later reinforced this stance in a fundraising email.

This public call for impeachment places Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive voice, at the more extreme end of Democratic responses, particularly as many in her party have been hesitant to invoke impeachment proceedings.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) also condemned Trump’s actions, emphasizing that the President “failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force and risks American entanglement in a potentially disastrous war in the Middle East.”

Jeffries added that Trump “shoulders complete and total responsibility for any adverse consequences.”

However, Ocasio-Cortez’s position quickly drew fire from Republicans.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) labeled Ocasio-Cortez a “pathetic little hypocrite” on X, criticizing her perceived shift from supporting U.S. military involvement in the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine to now opposing intervention in Iran.

“Shut up, you pathetic little hypocrite,” Greene wrote. “YOU fully supported our military and IC running the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine. And you VOTED to fund the Ukraine war under your President with dementia. You don’t get to play anti-war and moral outrage anymore.”

Following the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Greene issued a lengthy and sharply worded statement, expressing strong disapproval of the military action and calling for a re-evaluation of American foreign policy.

Her remarks highlight a growing sentiment among some conservatives to prioritize domestic issues over international military engagements, even as a detailed record of Iranian and Iran-backed attacks against Americans spans decades.

In a public statement, Greene questioned the rationale behind targeting Iran, stating, “I don’t know anyone in America who has been the victim of a crime or killed by Iran, but I know many people who have been victims of crime committed by criminal illegal aliens or MURDERED by Cartel and Chinese fentanyl/drugs.”

She contrasted the focus on Iran with what she described as a lack of action against drug cartels and other threats on the U.S. border, arguing, “America has not dropped bunker busters on the Cartel’s sophisticated drug tunnels, launched tomahawks on massive cartel poisonous drug operations, or gone to war against the cartels international terrorists networks.”

Greene concluded by acknowledging the reality of the strikes but voiced concerns about potential Iranian retaliation and the U.S. being drawn into a broader conflict initiated by Israel.

“Americans now fear Iranian terrorists attacks on our own soil and being dragged into another war by Netanyahu when we weren’t even thinking about any of this a week ago,” she stated, concluding with a prayer for peace and an end to “the constant demand for America to go to war. Enough is enough.”
