AOC Breaks Silence On White House Rumors: ‘My Ambition Is Way Bigger Than A Title’

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is keeping the political world guessing about her future, telling a crowd in Chicago that her ultimate goals extend far beyond winning a specific office.

During a talk at the University of Chicago on May 8, the high-profile Democrat was pressed by strategist David Axelrod on whether she has her sights set on the presidency or a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Ocasio-Cortez, who has been a frequent subject of speculation regarding higher office since she first arrived in Washington, declined to give a definitive “yes” or “no” regarding a future run. Instead, she characterized her political drive as something that isn’t tied to a “positional” title or a specific seat.

“My ambition is way bigger than that,” she told Axelrod. “My ambition is to change this country.”

The congresswoman explained her perspective by noting that while individual presidents and senators eventually “come and go,” the impact of sweeping policy changes can be permanent. She specifically pointed to goals such as single-payer healthcare, a living wage, and expanded rights for women and workers as the types of shifts she considers “forever.”

“I don’t want to make decisions from a place of what’s in it for me. I want to make decisions from a place of how are we going to change the country,” she said.

The remarks come at a time when some voters are already looking toward the future of the Democratic party. According to a Harvard CAPS Harris poll conducted late last month, 8% of Democratic voters named Ocasio-Cortez as their preferred choice for the party’s next presidential candidate.

Ocasio-Cortez first rose to national prominence in 2018 when she pulled off a major political upset, defeating longtime incumbent Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary.

Since then, she has been re-elected three times and has become a leading voice of “The Squad,” an informal group of progressive lawmakers that includes Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

While she remains a polarizing figure in national politics, her comments in Chicago suggest her focus remains on long-term legislative shifts rather than immediate career advancement.
