AOC Takes Shock Lead In 2028 Presidential Primary Poll As Progressives Surge

The 2028 presidential landscape shifted this week as a new poll from AtlasIntel placed Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the top spot for the Democratic nomination.

This marks the first time the New York progressive has led a field of potential rivals, signaling a possible realignment within the party ahead of the next election cycle.

According to the data, 26% of Democratic voters currently back Ocasio-Cortez. She is followed closely by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 22.4% and California Governor Gavin Newsom at 21.2%. Former Vice President Kamala Harris sits in fourth place with 12.9% support.

The survey, which reached 2,069 U.S. adults between May 4 and May 7, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

The poll results follow a high-profile interview between Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic strategist David Axelrod, where she addressed persistent speculation regarding her political future. While Ocasio-Cortez has not officially declared a run for the White House or a potential primary challenge against Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, she emphasized that her focus remains on policy rather than titles.

“They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat,” Ocasio-Cortez told Axelrod. “And my ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country.” She added that single-payer healthcare, living wages, and workers’ rights are “forever,” while elected officials “come and go.”

On the Republican side, the primary field appears more consolidated. Secretary of State Marco Rubio currently leads with 45.4% of the vote, holding a significant lead over Vice President JD Vance and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

President Donald Trump discussed the Republican field during a White House event on May 11, referring to Rubio and Vance as a potential “dream team.”

However, the President stopped short of a formal endorsement for the 2028 ticket. “I do believe that’s a dream team, but these are minor details,” Trump said. “That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstances. I think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate.”

While the AtlasIntel poll provides Ocasio-Cortez with momentum, prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket continue to lean toward Newsom and Harris as more likely nominees. These markets currently give Ocasio-Cortez roughly an 8% chance of winning the primary, reflecting a divide between current voter sentiment and trader expectations.

As the 2026 midterms approach, prospective candidates are expected to increase their travel to early primary states to test their messaging and build the national infrastructure required for a 2028 run.
