Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, the White House confirmed Monday.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the development. Driscoll served as the Army’s top civilian official under Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and reports indicated he had considered stepping down following disagreements within department leadership.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly issued a statement to the Associated Press regarding Driscoll’s service.
“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more,” Kelly said. “The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War.”
Driscoll’s departure follows several recent leadership changes, leak investigations, and budget discussions at the War Department. In April, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George was removed from his post, and Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa, stepped down in June.
Driscoll addressed George’s removal during congressional testimony in April, stating that he and his family visited George’s home afterward.
“That being said, the civilian leadership, the design of our system, is that they get to pick the leaders that they want,” Driscoll told lawmakers.
An Iraq War veteran, tech investor, and former adviser to JD Vance, Driscoll was nominated by Trump in 2024 and confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 in a 66-28 vote.
During his tenure, Driscoll assisted with negotiations related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Within the department, his work focused on modernizing systems, developing drone and counter-drone technologies, and altering procurement processes for military contractors.
