ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – St. Petersburg Police Detectives have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a city resident last week.
Corey Deron Battle, 47, was taken into custody on Sunday, November 2nd, and is being held on a charge of 2nd Degree Murder for the death of Jerome Smith, 44.
Smith was initially discovered by a neighbor on Thursday, October 30th, at approximately 8:47 p.m. The neighbor contacted police after finding Smith bleeding at his home, located at 833 21st Avenue South. Upon arrival, officers confirmed Smith had suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital. RELATED: St. Petersburg Man In Critical Condition After Late-Night Shooting
Despite receiving medical care, Smith succumbed to his injuries three days later, on Sunday, November 2nd.
Detectives’ investigation revealed that Battle and Smith were acquainted. Police state the shooting was the result of a dispute between the two men at Smith’s home that escalated.
Battle was arrested and charged on the same day Smith died. The St. Petersburg Police Department has confirmed that the investigation into this case remains active.
