TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. — Police have arrested suspects and recovered most of the assets tied to a multi-state fraud and burglary case that cost a local resident roughly $1.5 million in jewelry and precious metals, the Treasure Island Police Department announced.
The case originated from a phone scam where callers impersonated bank representatives. The operation triggered a months-long investigation spanning several jurisdictions and states.
Working alongside the Sixth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office and partner law enforcement agencies, investigators have recovered about 83% of the victim’s wire fraud losses.
“This case is an important reminder that these scams can be extremely convincing. If something doesn’t seem right, stop, verify who you are dealing with, and never be pressured into transferring money or valuables,” Treasure Island Police Chief John Barkley said.
Police will hold a news conference to share more details on the suspects, the arrests, and the investigation on Friday, August 21, at 11 a.m.
