THE BREAKDOWN: As the death toll from the June 24, 2026, earthquake in Venezuela surpasses 900 people, the United States government has launched a massive humanitarian response. The relief operation involves deploying more than 250 search-and-rescue personnel, activating regional military assets for logistical support, setting up free Starlink satellite internet, and committing $150 million in financial aid to assist survivors and emergency workers on the ground.
With the official death toll now climbing past 900 people following a devastating earthquake in Venezuela, a massive U.S. disaster relief operation is shifting into high gear. The State Department announced Friday that a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) consisting of more than 250 personnel has been deployed to the country to assist local responders and the Venezuelan interim government in a race against time to locate any remaining survivors trapped in the rubble.
Central to the rescue efforts are three elite Urban Search-and-Rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia; Los Angeles County, California; and Miami-Dade County, Florida. These highly trained units are transporting more than 200,000 pounds of specialized equipment using U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft.
The Fairfax County squad arrived with 79 members and six search dogs, while the Los Angeles team is landing shortly with 74 members and another six canine specialists. An 80-member team from Miami-Dade is scheduled to arrive late Friday evening. These teams are made up of firefighters experienced in structural collapses, emergency physicians, paramedics, and structural engineers who can evaluate building safety in real time.
Because of the severe damage to local infrastructure, the State Department requested logistical support from the U.S. military. U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is utilizing assets already stationed in the region to accelerate the movement of emergency supplies.
Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys are currently checking the status of airfields near the earthquake’s epicenter, while Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters are flying in from Honduras to transport workers and equipment. On the water, the Navy vessels USS Fort Lauderdale and USS Billings are providing naval support off the coast. In space, the U.S. Space Force is utilizing satellite imagery to map out the destruction and help ground crews figure out where aid is needed most.
Communication lines are heavily compromised across the disaster zones, prompting an emergency rollout of free satellite internet. Utilizing a two-year partnership signed between the State Department and Starlink on June 11, 2026, emergency teams are setting up portable satellite terminals.
The low-Earth orbit technology is designed to bypass damaged ground infrastructure, giving local first responders, aid organizations, and affected citizens immediate web access to coordinate relief efforts.
On the financial front, the U.S. has pledged a total of $150 million in emergency funding. A $100 million contribution is being directed to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Venezuela pooled fund.
The remaining $50 million will be distributed through bilateral awards to prominent international humanitarian organizations already operating on the ground, including UNICEF, the World Food Program, World Vision, Samaritan’s Purse, Catholic Relief Services, and the International Organization for Migration.
U.S. officials are also prioritizing the safety of American citizens currently in Venezuela. The State Department is advising Americans in the area to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security alerts and monitor official travel updates.
