A relentless winter storm continues to hammer the United States, and the human cost is rising. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that at least 30 people have died due to the dangerous weather over the weekend.

The freezing conditions have hit the southern states the hardest, leaving a path of destruction and misery stretching from Texas to Tennessee.

For hundreds of thousands of families, the bitter cold is made worse by a lack of power.

Heavy ice has snapped power lines and toppled trees, cutting off electricity just when people need heat the most. Utility crews are working around the clock to fix the grid, but the damage is widespread and difficult to repair in these conditions.

The sheer scale of this freeze is hard to grasp. Right now, around 175 million people are living under some form of cold-weather alert.

That is more than half the country dealing with dangerous temperatures. The National Weather Service says this isn’t just a normal cold front; it is historic. Cities across the Plains are seeing temperatures drop to levels never recorded before on these dates.

Unfortunately, the shivering isn’t over yet. Forecasters warn that the brutal cold isn’t going anywhere soon.

While the snow might stop falling in some places, the freezing air is going to linger for days. More record-breaking low temperatures are expected to sweep across the South and East through the rest of the week, keeping millions of Americans in the grip of a truly dangerous winter.
