At Least Three Killed In Florida After Pileup Crashes On I-95

At least three people have died and several others seriously injured following a pileup of crashes involving at least 17 cars and trucks on Interstate 95 early Thursday in Volusia County, troopers say.

At least three crashes happened in the northbound lanes and one in the southbound lanes near the State Road 442 exit in Edgewater around 1:30 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At the time of the crash, smoke and fog had reduced visibility to near zero, according to ClickOrlando.com.

One of the crashed vehicles was a semi-truck that caught fire and led to an explosion, WFTV reporter Alexa Lorenzo posted on Twitter.

The crashes happened while the area was experiencing “superfog,” a rare event involving smoke from prescribed fires, and moisture, which can reduce visibility to less than 10 feet.

FHP spokeswoman Kim Montes told ClickOrlando.com that drivers said visibility suddenly dropped to zero in the area and some of them stopped on the shoulder of the interstate while others stopped on the roadway.
