Auburn Alert: USF’s Byrum Brown Poised For Reunion With Alex Golesh

The nation’s leader in total offense is officially on the market, and the tea leaves are pointing toward a high-profile reunion on the Plains. Byrum Brown informed the University of South Florida of his decision to transfer this morning, and sources tell CBS Sports that Auburn is the team to watch.

A move to Auburn would re-link the dynamic quarterback with Alex Golesh, the head coach who orchestrated his rise to stardom.

Golesh, who was hired to lead the Tigers on November 30, spent the last three seasons rebuilding USF’s identity.

The 41-year-old Russian-born coach took over a Bulls program that had gone 4-29 in the previous three years.

He engineered a massive turnaround, leaving Tampa with a 23-15 record and a roster full of developed talent, including Brown, receiver Sean Atkins, and linebacker Mac Harris, as the Tampa Free Press previously reported.

Now, Golesh appears ready to bring the engine of that offense with him.

Brown’s production under Golesh was historic. Averaging 347 yards of total offense per game—13 yards clear of Vanderbilt’s Heisman finalist Diego Pavia—Brown became the focal point of one of the country’s most explosive units.

During a 52-3 rout of Rice earlier this season, he cemented his legacy by becoming just the 12th player in FBS history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

For Auburn, the potential addition comes at a critical juncture. The program has been searching for stability under center since the beginning of Hugh Freeze’s tenure in 2023.

Recent transfer portal additions haven’t yielded long-term answers; Payton Thorne struggled with consistency despite his experience, and Jackson Arnold’s brief 2025 stint highlighted the Tigers’ difficulty in finding the right fit.

Golesh built his system around Brown’s dual-threat capabilities, and importing a quarterback who already knows the playbook could fast-track the culture change Golesh is looking to implement in the SEC.

Brown sat out USF’s Cure Bowl loss to Old Dominion last Wednesday. While the Bulls made a significant push to keep him, the allure of reuniting with the coach who helped him break his own single-season touchdown record (28) seems to have tipped the scales.
