Auctioned Storage Safe In Florida Leads To Conviction Of ‘Elite’ Child Abuser

A federal jury in Jacksonville, Florida, has convicted a 56-year-old Cocoa man on 11 child exploitation charges after a missed payment on a storage unit exposed a massive stash of abuse material.

Frederick Karl Hildenbrand was found guilty of nine counts of producing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and two counts of possessing CSAM. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, Hildenbrand faces 15 to 30 years in federal prison for each production count, and up to 20 years for each possession count. The maximum penalties for possession were heightened after the jury found the material depicted young children.

The case against Hildenbrand unfolded by chance in May 2024. After Hildenbrand’s storage unit changed ownership, his payments stopped processing, prompting the company to auction off the contents of the unit. The buyer who purchased the unit opened a safe found inside and discovered multiple pairs of soiled children’s undergarments. The garments were labeled with names and individually packaged in plastic bags.

Alongside the clothing, the safe contained tapes and electronic devices filled with abuse material. The buyer turned the safe over to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, launching the investigation.

Evidence presented during the trial showed that Hildenbrand produced the files and tapes between 2004 and 2014 while living in Ohio. The material depicted Hildenbrand sexually abusing children, including infants and toddlers. He later transported the safe when he and his wife relocated to northeast Florida, placing it in the rented storage unit in 2018.

In July 2024, Hildenbrand discovered his unit had been auctioned and contacted the facility to recover his property. During a series of recorded phone calls, he repeatedly stated that he specifically wanted the contents of the safe returned.

Hildenbrand was actually speaking with an undercover detective from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. On August 5, 2024, Hildenbrand drove three hours from his home in Cocoa to Clay County to retrieve the safe, where authorities arrested him.

A subsequent search of Hildenbrand’s residence turned up additional electronic devices containing abuse material. Data on those devices revealed that Hildenbrand had continued to film himself abusing children until at least June 2024.

Investigators stated that Hildenbrand possessed a total of at least 10,000 images and videos of child abuse. Law enforcement also recovered a text file on one of his computers containing two versions of a poem Hildenbrand wrote detailing his attraction to children. In the text, he referred to himself as an “Elite ranked pedophile” for over 30 years.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Cocoa Police Department, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Department of Children and Families. Assistant United States Attorney Laura Cofer Taylor prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a federal Department of Justice initiative established in 2006.

Hildenbrand remains in custody pending his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for September 22, 2026.
