TAMPA, Fla. — What started as a casual Sunday evening cookout turned into a nightmare this past weekend when a physical fight escalated into a fatal shooting at a home in the 3000 block of West Spruce Street.

Tampa Police announced Tuesday that 20-year-old Aniel Avidan Galo-Chavez is behind bars following the death of a man in his mid-30s. According to investigators, the violence erupted on February 15 during a gathering where several people who knew each other were hanging out.

The scene reportedly devolved into several arguments and physical brawls among the guests. Detectives say one particular fight broke out between Galo-Chavez, the victim, and another adult male. While that specific scuffle eventually ended and the victim walked away into another room, the peace was short-lived.

Police reports state that Galo-Chavez went into a bedroom, grabbed a firearm, and returned to shoot the victim, who was unarmed at the time. When officers arrived at the scene shortly after the call came in, they found the victim deceased from a gunshot wound.

While the initial response involved detaining everyone at the house for questioning, the investigation eventually pointed toward Galo-Chavez. Detectives recovered a gun at the residence and spent the following 48 hours conducting interviews and piecing together the timeline.

“This incident is a tragic reminder that conflicts should not be resolved with violence,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. He noted that a simple disagreement has now caused a permanent loss of life and left everyone involved facing devastating consequences.

Galo-Chavez was taken into custody at his home on February 17 without any further trouble. He has been booked into the Orient Road Jail and faces a charge of second-degree murder. Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim.
