LAKELAND, Fla. – The Lakeland Police Department opened a search on Tuesday for ordained ministers willing to step into the high-stakes world of law enforcement as volunteer police chaplains.
According to a department announcement released on June 9, 2026, the agency is looking for clergy members to provide emotional and spiritual support to police officers, staff, and local residents during crises. The role is diverse, requiring volunteers to respond directly to critical incidents, assist officers with death notifications, and counsel department personnel and their families. Chaplains also support community members affected by crime and serve as a bridge between the police department, local faith communities, and social service agencies.
The position is strictly voluntary, but the department has set specific prerequisites for those looking to apply. Applicants must be ordained and in good ecclesiastical standing with their respective denominations. Because of the sensitive nature of police work, candidates must pass a background investigation and show a willingness to undergo specialized training to familiarize themselves with law enforcement culture and ethics.
The agency also noted that volunteers must be available to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice, maintain strict confidentiality, remain neutral, and show respect for all religious faiths. Emotional resilience, maturity, pastoral sensitivity, and strong teamwork skills are required.
