LAKELAND, Fla. — A 46-year-old Bartow man died following a deputy-involved shooting in a Lakeland grocery store parking lot, according to law enforcement officials.
The 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force has opened an investigation into the shooting, which took place in the parking lot of the Save A Lot located at 2021 George Jenkins Blvd.
Authorities identified the man as Larry Renaldo Riles. No deputies were injured during the encounter. Emergency services transported Riles to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead.
According to official records, Riles’ criminal history consists of three previous felony charges. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office first arrested him in 2007 for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office subsequently arrested him on Oct. 27, 2025, for grand theft, and again on March 20, 2026, after he failed a court-mandated drug test while on probation.
Riles was released from custody on April 14, 2026. At the time of the shooting, he was on active probation and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a probation violation.
