WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Winter Haven’s Lake Silver will take center stage this Saturday, June 27, as local athletes look to defend their turf at the Southern Regional Show Ski Tournament.
The day-long event kicks off at 8 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, bringing together the elite of Florida’s show-skiing community.
The Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team enters the weekend as the defending regional champion. They face a highly competitive field this year, headlined by top challengers including the Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team and the Sarasota Ski-A-Rees. Gatorland will also take to the water, performing as an exhibition team to showcase their skills without competing for tournament points.
Unlike traditional athletic events, a show ski tournament functions like a live theatrical production on water. Judges will evaluate each team based on a mix of technical difficulty, choreography, creativity, crowd appeal, and overall presentation.
The tournament relies on a rigorous, tightly timed format. Each competing team gets a total block of 90 minutes on the water: exactly 20 minutes to set up their gear, a strict 60-minute window to execute their performance, and 10 minutes to tear down before the next team takes over.
Within that single hour of performance time, teams must deliver a fast-paced, seamless production featuring up to 14 different acts.
For the hosts, the tournament is a chance to build on the area’s deep roots in the sport. Local organizers emphasize that the event serves as a celebration of the sport’s enduring popularity in Central Florida, highlighting Winter Haven’s long-standing legacy as a foundational hub for modern water ski entertainment.
