“Because It Was Unlocked”: Massachusetts Duo Jailed For Florida Car Burglary, Dumpster Fire

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Two Massachusetts residents are sitting in jail after breaking into a Mercedes at a Key Largo repair shop and starting a dumpster fire on Monday, June 1.

Evan Robert Aubrey, 36, of Winchester, was charged with arson, accessory, and criminal mischief. Chabar Sara Duangsay, 36, of Fitchburg, was charged with burglary. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office headed to a vehicle repair business on the 101000 block of the Overseas Highway around 7:45 a.m. A worker at the shop had called authorities after catching the two suspects in the act of burglarizing a parked Mercedes sedan.

When confronted, Aubrey told the employee that he and Duangsay were burglarizing the car simply because it was left unlocked.

Security camera footage confirmed the crime. The video showed Duangsay wearing black latex gloves and removing items from the car while Aubrey directed her.

Both suspects ultimately admitted to the vehicle burglary. Aubrey also confessed to tossing a lit cigar into the property’s dumpster, which sparked the fire. Aubrey and Duangsay were taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Monroe County Jail.

Bond has not yet been set for either suspects.
