Biden Is Draining Support Among Many Groups Thought To Be Loyal To The Democratic Party’s Core

Despite his best efforts to pander to any group that isn’t straight white men, public opinion polls released over the last few days show President Joe Biden is hemorrhaging supporters at almost every turn.

Consider: The Boston Globe lamented on Sunday “even in this deep blue stronghold, Biden has fallen hard.” His approval rating among voters in Massachusetts now stands at 46 percent – in a state where he defeated former President Donald Trump in 2020 by 33 points.

In terms of raw numbers among the more than 700 people surveyed, those who disapproved of Biden actually outnumbered those who approved, 354 to 352.

CNN last week reported that Biden was rapidly draining support among black voters – the most hardcore constituency in the Democratic Party. The network cited a Gallup poll that found 67 percent of blacks back Biden, down from 87 percent when he took office.

CNN reported that its own poll showed Biden’s support among blacks was 69 percent. The network also noted a recent Quinnipiac University poll that indicated Biden’s approval rating with blacks was even worse, 64 percent.

On Sunday, NPR noted, “Biden has a problem with young voters,” at least according to three recent polls the network cited. NPR’s own poll revealed that among Gen Z and millennials, Biden was backed by just 37 percent, which was down 16 percent over the past year and the lowest total of any age demographic. A Harvard poll of Gen Zers found Biden dropped 18 points in the last year, to 41 percent. Similarly, a Gallup survey of that group showed a 21-point drop, down to 39 percent.

Meanwhile, Democrats for three generations have been soft on illegal immigration in trying to build a coaltion of black and brown. Democrats bet that advocating more porous borders would win them support among native-born Hispanics and bring in new Hispanics from elsewhere who would turn out to be grateful new Democrats.

Yet on Monday Reuters reported that a Quinnipiac poll released April 13 “found that just 26% of Hispanic voters approved of Biden’s job performance, the lowest mark of any demographic.”

The reasons for this dissipating support for Biden vary. Many told pollsters they are concerned about the economy and historic inflation levels. Others, like young voters and some black Americans, don’t think Biden has been liberal enough, or has just ignored their needs.

But whatever the cause, it’s clear Biden is wildly unpopular across the board.

Liberals tried to seize onto a new Washington Post poll released Monday that showed Biden had gained ground. His approval rating went from 37 percent to 42 percent – which, based on averages, is about the peak it’s been for roughly nine months.

As Jim Geraghty of National Review noted on Monday, “Give CNN a little credit for telling its audience something it may not want to hear this morning: ‘The political environment is terrible for Democrats — and it may get worse.’”
