In a last-minute move before leaving office, President Joe Biden granted pardons to his brother, James Biden, and other relatives, citing concerns over politically motivated investigations that he believes have unfairly targeted his family. The presidential pardon, issued just minutes before the transition of power, comes after James Biden was implicated in House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into the president.

Alongside James Biden, the president also pardoned his sister, Valerie Biden Owens, her husband, John Owens, another brother, Francis Biden, and his sister, Sara Jones Biden, for unspecified crimes.

In a statement released by the White House, Biden defended his decision, arguing that relentless political scrutiny has harmed his family’s reputation and financial security.

“My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me — the worst kind of partisan politics,” Biden said in his last statement as president. “Unfortunately, I have no reason to believe these attacks will end.”

“Even when individuals have done nothing wrong and will ultimately be exonerated, the mere fact of being investigated or prosecuted can irreparably damage their reputations and finances,” Biden said.
