Former Dem Rep. Crowley Casts Doubt on NYC Nominee Mamdani’s Widespread Appeal
New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, fresh off his June 24th primary victory, is stirring national debate with his progressive platform. But not everyone in the Democratic party believes his brand of socialism will play well outside the five boroughs.
On Tuesday’s “Special Report with Bret Baier” on Fox News, former New York Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley admitted that while Mamdani’s socialist ideas might energize some in New York, they likely wouldn’t “work in the middle of Kansas” or even in his wife’s home state of Montana.

Crowley, a seasoned voice in Democratic politics, acknowledged the “enthusiasm” and “solutions” Democrats are seeking, particularly around issues like affordable housing, which he noted is “through the roof” in New York City.
However, he was quick to temper expectations about the broader applicability of Mamdani’s vision. “I don’t think that this election in New York City does transpose across the country,” Crowley stated, suggesting that what thrives in the Big Apple might wither elsewhere.
Mamdani’s policy proposals, which include a $30 minimum wage, a state-level corporate tax, a 2% flat tax on high earners, and a $10 billion plan for free amenities, have certainly grabbed headlines. He’s also pledged to end cooperation with ICE and defund the police – stances that have drawn both fervent support and sharp criticism.

Adding another layer to the controversy, Mamdani has faced calls to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada” after declining to do so in a recent interview. Yet, some prominent Democrats are rallying to his side. Former New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman, speaking on MSNBC, lauded Mamdani as the future of the party, arguing that “socialism” has been unfairly “weaponized” as an “anti-American” slur.
As New York City gears up for the November mayoral election, the national spotlight remains firmly on Mamdani and whether his progressive agenda is a blueprint for the Democratic party’s future or a uniquely urban experiment.
