Maher speaks out on “Club Random,” criticizing those who showed indifference or celebrated the death of the conservative activist.
In a new episode of his podcast “Club Random,” comedian Bill Maher denounced what he called a concerning lack of empathy from the political left following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Kirk, 31, was assassinated on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University where he was engaging in a debate.
Authorities have since arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the murder.

Speaking on the episode, which was recorded the day of the assassination, Maher expressed deep sorrow over the event. “I might drink a little more than usual today because, I mean, I don’t know when this is airing, but this is a sh*t day ’cause a guy who sat there, Charlie Kirk, got shot today,” Maher said. “And I can’t stop thinking about it.”
He then directed his frustration at those on the other side of the political aisle.
“And if you’re on the other side of the political divide and you don’t care because the wrong team guy got shot, f**k you!” he added. “You’re what’s wrong with this country.”
Maher’s comments come amid a contentious online and media discourse surrounding Kirk’s death.

Fired MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd stated on Friday that he was “naive” to suggest on national television that Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk brought his assassination upon himself. Dowd’s comments, made before news of the assassination was widely known, led to his dismissal from the network.
In a Substack post, Dowd expressed his surprise at the outrage his comments generated, writing, “I thought to myself how could anyone disagree with this. I guess I was naive.” He explained his reasoning, linking Kirk’s “divisive and polarizing” persona to a broader national climate of “toxic” divisiveness and widespread gun ownership. Dowd invoked the Holocaust survivors’ campaign, #ItStartedWithWords, to support his point that “hateful thoughts lead to hateful words which ultimately lead to hateful actions.”

The political analyst alleges that MSNBC caved to pressure from a “Right Wing media mob” despite knowing his words were being “misconstrued.” He also reiterated his controversial theory that the shot might have been a celebratory one, fired by someone who supported Kirk’s “diehard” advocacy for the Second Amendment.
The assassination has been met with mixed reactions. While many mourned Kirk’s death, some left-wing activists and academics have celebrated it. University of Michigan assistant professor Charles H.F. Davis called the assassination a “solution,” and Middle Tennessee State University fired assistant dean Laura Sosh-Lightsy for a Facebook post in which she expressed “zero sympathy” for Kirk.

Authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson for the assassination after his own father turned him in. Robinson confessed to his father that he murdered Kirk at Utah Valley University, prompting his father to contact a youth pastor, who then called the U.S. Marshals. Robinson is currently awaiting federal and local charges.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that Robinson’s father had noticed his son becoming “more political” and “full of hate” in recent years. Robinson had also told his family the night before that he “disliked” Kirk.
