Bill Maher Blasts Trump’s Iran War Timing: ‘They Missed Their Window’

Bill Maher thinks the Trump administration’s timing on the Iran war was about as well-executed as a bad comedy set, arguing that officials “f–ked up a lot” and completely “missed their window” to topple the regime.

During a chat on Billy Bush’s Hot Mics podcast—filmed at his own “Club Random” studio—the Real Time host confessed he actually supported the initial idea of going to war. However, he thinks the administration’s calendar skills left a lot to be desired. According to Maher, the U.S. should have launched its strikes while local citizens were actively protesting in the streets.

“There’s still a possibility that the regime will be overthrown. My personal feeling is they missed their window,” Maher said. “They should have started the war when the people were in the streets, because that was the time to do it.”

Maher was talking about the massive demonstrations against Iran’s theocratic government in late 2025 and early 2026. While outside organizations estimate around 30,000 protesters were killed by the government, President Trump has claimed the number is closer to 42,000.

By waiting around, Maher argued, the administration essentially let the Iranian government eliminate the home-team advantage. “They waited until the regime killed all those people in the streets, waited a couple of months, and then all of those people who would be there to lead the revolution — they’re all gone now,” he said.

Maher did float the idea that Israel might be “planning something big” to surprise everyone and knock out the remaining leadership, but his current advice for the U.S. is to cut its losses and wrap things up.

“I thought it was a good idea to try. I thought they f–ked up a lot of what they were actually doing, and now let’s not make a bad situation worse,” Maher said. “Let’s get out of this as cleanly as we can, and we’ll try again at some point, if we have to.”

The comedian’s critique comes right after President Trump teased that a peace deal was coming “shortly,” though follow-up reports suggest “shortly” might actually mean another week or more.

Despite the heavy political criticism, Maher insisted his relationship with Trump isn’t completely sour, revealing that the two have text-messaged multiple times since a surprisingly “genial” dinner they shared at the White House.

Maher even proudly flaunted a framed document signed by Trump himself during an Oval Office visit—a complete list of every insult Trump had ever hurled at Maher over the years, which the comedian now considers his “prized possession.”
