Comedian Bill Maher acknowledged President Donald Trump’s “enormous success,” despite not being a supporter, during his “Club Random” podcast on Monday. Speaking with actor William H. Macy, Maher emphasized the importance of respecting success regardless of one’s personal preference.

“I always say this — you cannot ever deny success,” Maher said. “You just have to give your respect even if it’s not your thing. Have the humility to give it up for enormous success on any level. Trump — not my choice, didn’t vote for him… I can’t deny the success.” Macy agreed, noting, “he’s the president.”

The conversation also touched on Maher’s visit to the White House in April, a move that drew criticism from some liberals.

Macy pointed out a signed sheet hanging in the studio listing the many insults Trump had levied at Maher, which the president signed during the visit. Maher commented on the president’s ability to quickly generate the insults, calling it “f—ing brilliant.”

Maher described the president during their meeting as “gracious and measured,” suggesting the private man differs from his public persona. He also shared that he felt more comfortable speaking with President Trump than he had with former Presidents Clinton and Obama, suggesting this difference “is emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days.”

A frequent critic of the president, Maher has previously credited Trump as one of the “most effective” politicians for his authenticity and ability to “always lean in to being more who you are.”
