Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is doing more than handing out degrees; it is driving a nearly $6.8 billion economic engine across the Sunshine State.

That is the bottom line of a new independent research project released today by Florida TaxWatch (FTW). The government watchdog group analyzed the fiscal reach of the private research university, looking at everything from operational spending to the financial ripple effects of its alumni.

According to the data for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the university’s combined influence—including operations and alumni activity—supports 36,841 jobs statewide. That activity translates to an estimated economic impact of $6.79 billion.

While the university is based in Ft. Lauderdale-Davie, its footprint extends through satellite campuses in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Myers, and Palm Beach, as well as Puerto Rico.

Beyond the raw dollar amounts, the report highlights NSU’s critical role in the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Jeff Kottkamp, Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Florida TaxWatch, pointed to the university’s unique medical credentials as a major economic driver.

“As one of only three universities in the U.S. with both Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) colleges, NSU is the largest educator of physicians in Florida and the largest producer of health care providers, with terminal degrees, in the nation,” Kottkamp stated.

Key Findings from the Report:

  • Tax Revenue: NSU generated an estimated $305.1 million in state and local taxes for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
  • Employment: University operations alone support over 10,400 jobs, while alumni spending supports an additional 26,425 jobs.
  • Student ROI: The study suggests a strong return on investment for those paying tuition. For every dollar a student invests in their education at NSU, the return in earnings gained is more than $6.

Dominic M. Calabro, President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, noted that the institution has cemented itself as a “top employer” in the region.

“Nova Southeastern University has developed a reputation for producing confident, capable, and caring professionals who make a difference in the lives of people in Florida and around the world,” Calabro said.

With an enrollment topping 20,000 students, the university continues to prioritize high-impact
