A 69-year-old Florida man is facing second-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing his wife’s lover in the parking lot of a Miami flea market. The dramatic incident, which unfolded on July 12 at the Northside Shopping Center, appears to be the tragic culmination of a years-long affair and escalating tensions.

Omar Rene Aguila was arrested on Thursday and is accused of gunning down a man whose identity has not yet been publicly released.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald, the victim and Aguila’s wife began an affair in 2019. Aguila reportedly discovered the relationship in April 2024 and urged his wife to end it.

Tensions flared just two days before the fatal shooting when the victim reportedly appeared at Aguila’s home, leading to a confrontation between the two men.

The situation escalated dramatically on July 12. Aguila was at the flea market with his wife and son when the victim arrived to drop off food for a friend. The victim then reportedly attempted to speak with Aguila’s wife before leaving.

According to the affidavit, Aguila approached the victim’s car, and an argument ensued. Within seconds, Aguila allegedly produced a firearm and shot the man multiple times. Surveillance video reportedly captured the entire incident, providing crucial evidence for investigators.

Paramedics transported the critically wounded victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Initially, authorities reportedly released Aguila after he claimed self-defense, asserting that the victim was armed. However, detectives later determined that the victim was not carrying a weapon. Furthermore, investigators discovered that Aguila is a convicted felon, legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. As a result, in addition to the murder charge, he is also facing a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

Aguila is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the volatile and tragic consequences of a love affair gone wrong.
